Shell Eco-marathon challenges is a competition to design, build and test ultra energy-efficient vehicles. The participants were challenged to design and build a vehicle with many innovation to maximize fuel efficiency by develop body, chasis, engine and drive line. The winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy.
Shell Eco-marathon is held by shell with annual events first in the Americas, then Europe and Asia.In Asia, SEM 2016 will be held in Manila,Philipines from 3rd-6th February. The participants are student from college and high school in Asia-Pasific and Midle East.
The competition is split into two classes. The Prototype class focuses on maximum efficiency, while passenger comfort takes a back seat. The UrbanConcept class encourages more practical designs. Cars enter one of seven categories to run on conventional petrol and diesel, biofuels, fuel made from natural gas (GTL), hydrogen, solar or electricity. Beside design and build a vehicle, there is off track award that are given for other achievements including safety, teamwork, design, and technical innovation.
This competition was held because of limited amount of source energy. As we know source of energy nowadays are getting depleted. So, we must use the energy efficiently or we make a renewable energy. The competition inspires the young engineers of the future to turn their vision of sustainable mobility into reality, if only for a few days. It also sparks passionate debate about what could one day be possible for cars on the road.
